Mike’s designs helped us tell a complex story about a highly technical business in a bright, clean, clear and compelling fashion. In addition, he gave our brand an engaging visual identity that helped make us instantly recognizable to our key audiences.
In a lean organization such as ours, it was a pleasure to work with someone as accomplished, skilled, versatile and personable as Mike Mullen, who simply did whatever it took to get the job done right.

Jon Pepper

Founding President/Publisher , Small Times Media

Part of our success was due to Mike’s proven talent as a visually and technically strong artist and designer. An equal part was due to Mike’s unusual ability to listen, learn and engage the rest of the project team, and translate all of that into his designs. We weren’t telling any story to any group — we were telling the Ford story to people who had been part of the Ford family of employees for generations. Mike’s designs were compelling, but they were also on target for that audience. We were fortunate to have Mike on that team.

Manager, Internal and Internet Communications, Ford Motor Company

Mike brings a collaborative spirit, but is perfectly capable of independence when that’s called for. I can recall each in abundance at Small Times Magazine. I was writing a cover story about the emerging use of micro- and nanotechnology in toys, and told him my working title was “Scratching a Niche,” a play on both the specialized nature of the industry as well as the fact that the tiny technology’s most famous use to date was within the Sony Aibo dog. Mike seized on the idea right away, contacting the right photographer and directing the cover shoot in helpful but unobtrusive ways. Once completed, he pored through scores of photos to find that perfect shot of Aibo scratching behind his ears and married that with the text in a way that managed to convey whimsy and authority. It was stark but inviting, and ended up being one of Small Times’ best covers.
